On September 16, 2025, the cross-country team had their second meet at San Luis Reservoir. The cross-country team, coached by Mr. Micheal Salaz ran their 5k.
The Boys Varsity team finished in 4th place with the five scorers finishing between 18-20 minutes, and their lead runner, Luis Salvatier (11) keeping their times steady throughout the meet.
“It’s challenging, and hard, but it’s worth it,” Salvatier said.
Salaz has coached the team for three years. He feels very proud of his team, knowing that the hours they put into this sport will eventually pay off.
He stated, “I know the work is long and hard, but I know it will benefit them in the long-term. I’m really looking forward to what this group of incredible students will achieve this year.”
The Varsity Girls were led by Yacqueline Aguirre (12), who finished her 5k in 24:03. They are showing great improvements since the previous season.
Cross-country is a sport where the main goal for athletes is to stay healthy, improve their times, and keep a steady pace.
Leonidas Melgar (12) has been part of the cross-country team since sophomore year. He is a very positive influence around the team, always focusing on improving. He said, “I wanted to stay athletic and not lose my endurance.”
Melgar has also participated in wrestling and track-field, because his goal is to train for the military. “I hope to improve my stamina, and continue this in the future!” he said.
Jesus Flores (12) has participated in cross-country for the last two years. Flores likes the sport because he enjoys running outdoors with the nice view, calm atmosphere, and friendly environment. “I wouldn’t say I’m the most athletic person, there are others who are, and yet I feel a good vibe from them,” he said.
The next cross country meet is scheduled for September 26 at Woodward Park, Fresno.
