The AVID Club, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is new to campus this year. While AVID has traditionally been a class over the last few years, there is now an additional club open to all students. At its core, the AVID Club is about preparing students for the future and giving them more opportunities to explore paths they may not have considered before. The AVID Club will be hosting a booth for the AVID Impact Day on September 25 at lunch to promote skills and class/club information.
According to AVID Club advisor, Mrs. Veronica Seaborn, the club is a great opportunity for “students who don’t have the class or didn’t know about the class” to still gain the benefits of the AVID program. The AVID Club is open to all students in grades 9 through 12. Its purpose is to help students start thinking about their futures and what colleges they might want to attend and what careers they might want to pursue.
“This club is about exposing students to college and preparing them for their futures,” said Seaborn.
“AVID Club was created by students who took AVID and couldn’t take their senior year because it didn’t fit in their schedule. It’s a way to keep that college-readiness focus alive.”
The club hosts a variety of activities, including college field trips, fundraisers, team bonding events, and potlucks. They’re also planning to fundraise for graduation accessories for qualifying members like AVID stoles.
“One of the main strategies in AVID is called WICOR,” Seaborn explained. “It stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading — and we’ll be working on those skills in the AVID Club as well.”
The current AVID Club officers are:
Melanie Rodriguez – President
Jocelyn Gonzalez – Vice President
Victoria De La Torre – Secretary
Belinda Zenteno – Treasurer
