The volleyball teams began to prepare for the first league game of the season in Merced on Sept. 23 against Golden Valley High School. Before this, they had tied three-to-three in the pre-season.
The freshman, junior varsity, and varsity teams played their first league game against Golden Valley. The freshman and varsity teams lost, but JV won their game.
The freshman team played close in score but eventually lost, winning one set of three. JV won two sets out of the three, defeating Golden Valley. Varsity lost all three sets, but still remain confident they will improve throughout the season.
Varsity player Katelynn Oliveira(12) said, “Our team is so excited to continue in the league. Yesterday’s game didn’t go the way we had hoped, but it happens. We played our hearts out, especially in the third set. All we need to do is come together even stronger as a team and put our best foot forward.”
As the season continues, all teams prepare to put in their best effort not only to win, but also to enjoy playing their sport. Players have said that playing volleyball with their friends beside them is just as rewarding as winning.
Freshman player Kacey Silveira(9) said, “I love winning and being with the people I love, even if we don’t win. I just love these girls.”
In the continuing season, these volleyball players will play about nine more games and a tournament. They will play against high schools from Atwater, Merced, Buhach, and more. The next game will be held on Oct. 2 in Atwater.
