The League of United Latin American Citizens also known as LULAC is more than just a club at our school. It’s a community dedicated to empowering Latino students and promoting cultural awareness.
The club advisor Mr. Uriel Malfabon tries to plan events during lunch to help keep the school more involved. Most recently, LULAC held a small celebration during lunch commemorating Mexican Independence Day Sept. 16. The event had popular Mexican refreshments known as aguas frescas in a variety of flavors. There was also musical entertainment featuring a local band or grupo, as is commonly known in Mexican culture.
Malfabon said, “I think it had a great turnout.” Malfabon has been the club’s advisor for the last three years. He said, “I like seeing the students work together and want to do something to celebrate who they are and where they’re from.”
He also talked about his officers taking charge and being organized. This school year LULAC officers are Isabella Guerra (12), president, Stephanie Alvarez (12), vice president, Romina Pedroza (12), secretary, Carlos Ravelero (12), treasurer, and Angline Tover (12) as social media coordinator.
LULAC President Guerra talked about her future plans for the club which include starting new traditions that will leave an impact on members.
Guerra stated that she wants “to bring joy and appreciation to our cultures.” She also mentioned her goal to raise enough money for an end of the year all expenses paid trip to Six Flags for the members with the most activity points.
LULAC invites students to their next event, their annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration happening Oct. 1. where they will have food vendors, dance performances and live music. The event is from 5:30-8:00 p.m. here at school and free to the community.
