Environmental Club Participates in Planting Project at San Luis Refuge

There are several environmental clubs across the entire country. Each club offers something unique and each one teaches something different. As a matter of fact, our own high school has an Environmental Club with Mrs. Thacker as adviser.

Bianca Chavarria (11), member of the Environmental Club was interested in this club’s activities of giving back to the environment, as well as learning the history behind each activity. Recently members participated in a planting project at the San Luis Refuge. Chavarria says, “The purpose of the Pollinator Garden Planting Project was to plant different types of plants that would assist in pollination. This will attract pollinator birds, insects, and wildlife mammals who will then diffuse pollen among other plants for fertilization.”

From these projects come learning new information and learning new things about yourself. Each person working on a project sees it from a different perspective which means everyone learns something different. Junior Jazmine Magana said, “I learned about what the San Luis Refuge does as an organization and how the center plays a role in educating the youth, sometimes hosting field trips.” In addition, Chavarria said that she “learned about the background of the chosen plants, the pollination cycle, and the importance of taking better care of our local refuge vegetation.”

When working on big projects such as the plant pollinator, students gain knowledge on things that may apply to every day life or even uses in the future. Magana commented, “Something I will take from this club and continue to use in my future is the people skills that I have developed. These are a set of skills that I will need throughout life, and have developed by communicating with my fellow group members and other organizations.”

For Chavarria, this experience is “something that I will take from this club and continue to use in my future is to spread the awareness of what it means to assist and care for our environment, as it is a big part of our lives since there are so many threats it faces. So it is up to us to continue on the growth of plants through any means of environmental volunteering.”
