Track and Field Season Begins
January 18, 2018
The track and field preseason started on Wednesday, January 10 and the season starts in February. The next few months involve conditioning and weight training for all athletes. Preseason training will held in the weight room on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The trainings will start at two times a week then progressively be more often as the season approaches.
Some say ,”How do weights help a runner?” Coach Luna has workouts to help in every event for all athletes. Sprinters, for example lift weights explosively to get their muscles used to quick changes. There will also be some cardio, but not much for preseason. For students going into throwing, lifting will be the focus for most of the time during the season. Coach Luna mentioned that throwers will start running more towards the beginning of the season to help student athletes build stamina for the season.
This year there will be a new throwing coach, Dylan Gibson, a recent graduate from LBHS. He participated in the event in high school and is learning more about the event on a coaching level. In addition, Coach Luna has finished college, so he will be able to make more time for practices. Give congrats to Coach Luna if you see him. The track team is also getting one hundred new uniforms for the whole team, and there will be no more than one hundred this year. Coach Luna says he is only keeping the top dedicated student athletes that are not going to mess around this year.
For any student at LBHS that have thought about track and field but does not know what to do come try it out this year. For the beginning of the season, all events are open for people to try. This way everyone can see what they are good at and which event to do. There are many reasons to try track. When asked about the benefits of track, Coach Luna says, “Get in shape, learn how to work with a team, make friendships.” He also says that most of his friendships throughout high school were from track and field.
Runners in track will not be running the whole time. In track there are many events from short sprints to mile runs. Events have their own practice groups. The coaches make it fun instead of just practicing the entire time. It is really a great experience, especially in meets where athletes can complete their running event, then hangout with friends until the next event starts.
Seventy students signed up this season, but if students are interested in participating in track and field, they should go to room 28 to sign up or talk to Coach Luna.
