ROP Marketing Profolio Day
February 8, 2019
Career Week starts March 11 through March 15. Students will have an opportunity to attend a Career Fair and speak with businesses associated to their career interests. In addition, ROP students are preparing for Portfolio Day to learn how to build a portfolio and conduct an interview properly.
ROP Marketing is a class for juniors and seniors taught by Ms. Austin. This class helps students have work experience by working several hours at local businesses. In addition, these jobs also help them be more responsible and professional. Students attend class only on Wednesdays, while the rest of the week, they are going to their job sites for two class periods a day.
ROP has a day call Portfolio Day. Students who are in the marketing class are interviewed by professional workers from school districts, police departments, city council members, and a couple of local businesses.
The students have to prepare their portfolios during class time for their interviews. There are several requirements for the portfolios. They have to have a table of contents, a cover letter, resume, job application, letter of recommendation, work sample, career ready practice self assessment, training plan, and a career action plan which is all worked on during class.
During the last three months of the class, the students stop working at their work sites and have class time to prepare for this event. The students have to come dressed professionally and have their portfolios done and ready at interview time.
Interview questions are prepared for students to practice their responses. Students prepare themselves to answers questions like, “What type of experience do you have?” or “What do you want to do as a career? Why?” Many questions are asked, even some like, “What job skills do you think you need to work on, such as communication skills, cash register, stock clerk, etc?”
Beware, they will also ask you questions you do not expect; the process and the interviewers may make students nervous, but the more students show they are nervous, the more points they will lose.
