Reactions to return to school

As the 2021 year comes to a close and COVID still exists, the Los Banos School District decided to open up again. Returning-to-campus students were split into two cohort groups.  The week of April 6 marked the first time students walked on campus for classes this year.  Students who did not want to return to in person classes continued to join classes virtually.

The schedule allows students to come to campus twice a week.  Group A attends Monday and Tuesday and group B attends school Thursday and Friday. To put this into perspective while one group is in class, the other is not. The classes are split also with periods 1 through 3 on Monday and Thursday, and periods 4 through 6 on Tuesday and Fridays.  School starts at 8:45 a.m. and it ends at 11:35 p.m. while group B and distance learning students start school at 12:35 p.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. Then it is vice versa on Thursday and Friday.

A lot of students have mixed feelings about returning to school so late in the year, especially the seniors. Many students felt it was too late in the year to return, and many felt that returning for just two days was not worth returning, despite seeing a few friends and teachers.

Senior, Julian Delgadillo said, ¨I actually kind of like the fact that we came back because I can come to school and kind of feel like everything is normal for a little bit. The only thing that sucks is that well half of our class is split it up.¨  With the two cohort groups, class sizes are less than ten students per class each day.

Jessica Garcia (12) replied when asked, if she felt safe coming to school due to the pandemic saying, ¨I do feel relatively safe because I´m vaccinated, so that makes me feel pretty good about going to school.¨

Overall most seniors like the idea and are trying to make the best out of what is left of their senior year that they could not experience due to this global pandemic. But many students appreciate the fact that they are part of an historical event to share in their lifetime.
