Cocaine Bear Movie Review

Jacob Reyna, Reporter

This review will contain some spoilers, but not too many as to not ruin the movie for people who want to watch it.

The new comedic thriller, Cocaine Bear, was released in theaters last Friday, February 24. The movie is based off of a true story of a black bear in the Chattahoochee National Forest that consumed cocaine found in a duffel bag in 1985. The cocaine was dropped from a plane piloted by drug smuggler Andrew Thornton. Now unlike the movie, the real cocaine bear did not go around mauling people. The black bear was found dead next to 40 bags that contained traces of cocaine. The actual cocaine bear most likely did not live very long after consuming the cocaine. After an autopsy was done on the remains, it was found that the bear had consumed 3 to 4 grams of cocaine.

Many people might think that creating a movie about a bear who consumes a large amount of drugs is a ridiculous idea. But it actually makes for a pretty entertaining movie. A plane is smuggling bricks of cocaine when the plane messes up and starts to go down. The smuggler attempts to parachute the drugs out of the plane in order to save some of it and ends up falling to his death. A bear finds the drugs and consumes it. The bear gets very high and aggressive and goes on a murderous rampage throughout the entire movie. The rest of the movie is filled with bloody death.

Before going to see this movie, I was not very eager as a lot of these movie studios have not really made anything worth watching recently. But I was very surprised to be entertained by this movie. I was laughing throughout the entire movie. Since the movie is based off of true events, I was unsure as to how the movie was made into an hour and a half if the real cocaine bear probably did not live very long after it consumed the cocaine. But all in all, the movie was very funny and very original. If you want a movie that has violence, but not too gory and is funny, this is the movie for you.
