Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 22nd. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and encouraging people to take action to protect our planet. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, and since then, it has grown to become a global movement with millions of people participating in activities to protect the environment.

The history of Earth Day dates back to the 1960s when there was a concern about the impact of human activities on the environment. Air and water pollution were uncontrollable, and the use of chemicals was unregulated. In 1969, a giant oil spill occurred off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, which led to the death of thousands of marine animals and birds. This event sparked a wave of public protests, and it was then that Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin had the idea of creating a national day to focus on the environment.

On April 22nd, 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated, and it was a huge success. Millions of people took to the streets to protest against environmental pollution, and it led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of several environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

Since then, Earth Day has grown to become a global event, and it is celebrated in over 190 countries. Each year, a theme is chosen to focus on a specific environmental issue, and various events and activities are organized around the world to raise awareness and encourage action to help save our planet.
