Taylor Swift drops unreleased songs

Emily Zaragosa, Reporter

In honor of the start of Taylor Swift’s tour, “The Eras Tour,” Swift has dropped four new unreleased songs in addition to her previous albums.

On recent social media platforms like Tik Tok and YouTube, snippets of unreleased music from Swift have gained the attention of many fans. Swift decided yesterday, March 16, to drop the four songs at midnight for fans to stream fully.

As your official Taylor Swift enthusiast/connoisseur, it is in my honor to inform and rate these new songs.

  1. All Of The Girls You Loved Before: 9/10

In addition to Taylor Swift’s seventh studio album, Lover, All Of The Girls You Loved Before was made for said album in 2019, but never released. In my opinion, this has been the most praised and anticipated song by fans for Swift to release and she definitely delivered. Fitting the “love” and “wistfulness” vibe of the album, All Of The Girls You Loved Before tells the story about Swift being thankful for her lover’s previous relationships for making him the man that he is now that she is in love with. It is unknown if the song is about her current relationship, (the same relationship during the Lover album), with actor Joe Alwyn, but it is easy to interpret that Alwyn and Swift’s relationship may have some influence, as Swift has wrote about Alwyn’s previous relationships before in her Reputation album. In my opinion, I rate this song a 9/10. Musically, the song fits the Lover vibe perfectly, as well as maintains the similar tune of another song off the album, Afterglow. Lyrically, the song is simple but also shows a sweet, vulnerable side to Swift who praises and appreciates her lover. All around, I rate a 9/10, and a perfect tune for a sunset car ride.

2. If This Was A Movie (Taylor’s Version): 8/10

Re-recorded from Taylor’s album, Speak Now (Deluxe Album), and added onto a different album, Fearless, If This Was A Movie focuses on the element of daydreaming about a lost love coming back into her life. The song plays out as a classic Taylor Swift country song, with many guitars and drums to create a certified great song. The lyrics have to be the best thing about the song, with just the right amount of sad and catchiness to draw fans in. I rate this song a solid 8/10. While I don’t listen to country that much, Taylor Swift’s country music will always be my guilty pleasure.

3. Eyes Open (Taylor’s Version): 6/10

In addition to Taylor Swift’s infamous album, Red, Swift released another re-recording of her song, Eyes Open, originally made for the “Hunger Games” franchise. This is the first of her two re-recordings for the Hunger Games franchise she re-released out of her four songs dropped.  The song allegedly did not appear in the film, but Swift teased the song in a later tour, which caused it to gain attention and drop as a part of the Hunger Games album. Musically, the song is quite hype and enthusiastic for a dystopian movie. I cannot give credit to the lyrics however, since they are based off the movie itself and I have no general knowledge of the storyline. I rate this song a 6/10, because I believe it to be a catchy song.

4. Safe and Sound (feat. Joy Williams and John Paul White): 5/10

Originally written as apart of the “Hunger Games” music franchise, Swift released the second remake of her songs for said franchise, Safe and Sound, with individual credits to the other appearing in the song, unlike before. The song follows the cinematic tune of the “Hunger Games” movie, with a sad, melancholy, and dystopian feel. Musically, the harmonies and instrumental carry a beautiful tune all throughout the song, as well as portray deep emotion. Lyrically, the lyrics are also simple, but it is a movie soundtrack song, so I did not expect it to be as lyrically inclined as a normal Taylor Swift song. I rate this song a 5/10 because while it is good, in my opinion, it sounds too much like a movie soundtrack song for me to play on a casual day.

All around I can say, Taylor Swift never disappoints and continues to set the bar even higher. “The Eras Tour” started March 17 in Glendale, Arizona.
