Wood shop fair projects

Daisy Martinez, Staff reporter

Fair is right around the corner for wood shop students. They are all finishing up and getting ready to put the final touches to their projects before turning it in.

Mr. Hill is the wood shop teacher. He says he has about 70 students turning in projects every year. The projects done in wood shop start from toll boxes to bigger things like outdoor kitchens. “I have community members come to me at least two times every month for a project they want,” says Hill. As a teacher he says like any other thing, wood shop has its dangers.  “You can loose body parts due to neglect of safety precautions,” Hill states. Wood shop spends many days throughout the year keeping students current on safety procedures for the class and for various tools.

We have asked some students about the class and the project they are making. Jose Ramos is a freshmen taking wood shop for the first year. So far Ramos says he enjoys the class and likes making new things with wood. Ramos is currently making a step stool. “I have been making this step stool for about 2 1/2 weeks now, and I feel good about it.” He also adds that he feels confident about this project even though it is his first project going into fair. “After it’s graded and I get it back, I will be giving it to my mother,” says Ramos.

As well as Ramos, Nevaeh Trigo, another freshman student from wood shop is making a step stool. Trigo says that she is very confident about the step stool going to fair, and she thinks it will get a great grade. She also mentioned that if someone really wants it, she would sell the stool, and if not, she would just keep it for herself.

Sophomore DaSani Tate is another student taking wood shop but unlike the others, it’s his second year taking it. He is currently making a night stand and it’s taking a while.   He says, ¨We have actually taken this slow.” Tate says that wood shop is a really fun class learning to make new things and getting to keep them.

On the other hand Celeste Garnica, junior has also been taking wood shop for two years and is making a night stand as well. ¨I think its cool that this will be going to fair and people get to see what young people are capable of doing.” Both Tate and Garnica believe that this is a good opportunity to get to make something just out of wood.

All wood shop projects will be judged at the fair in May. Good Luck!  Be sure to check out these projects in the Exhibitor Building.
