Choosing a college is a big moment for students. It means starting a new chapter, gaining independence, and stepping closer to the future they’ve been working toward.
Karley Rocha (12) decided to commit to Oklahoma State University after falling in love with the campus and atmosphere during her visit. “I have loved the school and the atmosphere ever since I visited, so once I got in, it was a given,” she said.
The opportunity in Greek life and student organizations also played a big role in her decision. “I love all the opportunities that are available in Greek life and the organizations they support,” Rocha added.
Rocha plans to double major in Agricultural Communications and Agricultural Education. Going out of state is a little intimidating, but she believes it will help her grow. “It’s kind of scary going so far, but I know I wouldn’t have the same experiences if I stayed closer to home,” she explained. Rocha also shared how the move will change her personally, saying, “Being in a completely new state will force me to go out of my comfort zone and grow.”
What excites her the most is the school spirit. “I’m most excited about game days and rush and being at a school with so much school spirit,” she said. She also joked, “I’m excited to not worry about any more applications.”
Yeraldi Cortez (12) chose Merced College because location mattered most to her. “Distance from home matters a lot to me,” she said. She is planning on majoring in criminology. She described her ideal campus as “clean with nice people,” which helped her feel comfortable with her choice.
Cortez feels confident about her decision and ready to move forward. “My decisions is made, so I’m pretty confident,” she shared.
Even though Rocha and Cortez chose different paths, both students are excited for what is next. Their stories show that every college journey is different, and the best choice is the one that fits each student’s goals and comfort.
