Black Student Union is selling Mardi Gras grams in celebration of the holiday and to bring awareness to it. The grams are on sale for students from Jan. 26 to February 5 in the student store.
Each gram includes a masquerade mask, colorful bead necklace and two lollipops. They are two dollars and will be delivered to each student who was gifted a gram after the sell period ends.
BSU officers and their advisor Ms. Chandra Lee were in charge of putting together the grams. However, the club also had help from various club members such as Kayla Celestine (12) who designed and created posters to advertise the grams.
BSU president Alana Arnold (12) said, “We had lots of help, for example Celestine made beautiful posters. We also had many more hard workers in Lee’s classroom with a make-shift assembly line of sorts to make the grams so they’re full of all our member’s love.”
Mardi Gras is a southern celebration typically held on the day before lent. The French phrase translates to Fat Tuesday and acts as a celebration of freedom before beginning the period of religious observance.
The festivities are mainly located in New Orleans and are organized by social clubs known as krewes, which follow a parade schedule and route each year. The history of Mardi Gras in the Southern United States shows the enduring spirit of celebration and cultural heritage.
All students are welcome to purchase the grams in the school’s student store during lunch until the end of the selling period. Students are encouraged to also wear the items to bring the celebration to campus.
