The end of the year can bring some bittersweet emotions. Students from different grade levels express their feelings about the 25-26 school year ending on June 4, with graduation on June 5.
Freshman Lily Tomas said, ¨The first year of high school went super well and it was so much fun meeting new people and making memories!¨
For most, the first year of high school is used as time to figure out what type of student and person they intend to be. Finding friends and navigating courses seems to be the primary goal.
In response to what she is most looking forward to moving past freshmen year, Tomas said, ¨Playing sports, learning new things and making new friends.¨
Tomas looks forward to sophomore year, but does it entail what she thinks? The popular phrase ¨Sophomore slump¨ expresses the lack of motivation sophomore students tend to experience. Abril Diaz (10) told her thoughts on the accuracy of the term.
¨I do believe sophomore slump is a thing,¨ Diaz said. ¨I think I experienced it this year.¨
Although ¨Sophomore slump¨ is well-known, it is more commonly said that Junior year is the most difficult year for high schoolers, due to the heavy work load and the stress of college decisions.
¨I am not nervous for Junior year,¨ Diaz said. ¨I plan on overcoming the struggles I might experience by not rushing, and moving day-by-day.¨
The struggles and challenges can deteriorate a scholar’s academic confidence causing them to lose focus on maintaining grades.
Junior, Brayden Diaz said, “This year was difficult because the work was a lot and there were more things to manage at the same time.”
Diaz participates in varsity golf so he’s had to learn to manage both his academics and extracurriculars outside of school.
Diaz said, “For my senior year, I am most excited about finishing high school, having a good time with friends, and preparing for what I have planned after high school.”
Not experiencing senior year yet, juniors tend to look forward to a possible four period schedule and having mostly electives for classes, but they don’t look at the full picture.
Paola Anguiano (12), said, “The hardest part of high school was staying motivated. At times it felt easier to give up and avoid tasks. However with certain actions come consequences, therefore having the discipline to be on top of my work has always been a priority.”
After having the experience of almost the full four years of high school, it is still important to keep in mind that academics will always be the main goal to maintain.
Anguinao said, “After four years and only two months away from graduation, it feels surreal and bittersweet. All throughout high school I wished for time to go faster and I couldn’t wait for the moment I would graduate. However, as a senior I wished I would’ve taken a moment to enjoy the present.”
While opinions about the end of the school year differ from grade to grade, the interviewed students agreed that they are excited for the future and what is yet to come.
