The Mustang Mentorship Program at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is an amazing opportunity for high school seniors who want to prepare for college. The program lasts seven months and connects students with Cal Poly mentors who guide them through the college process.
It focused on building confidence, learning how college works, and understanding important skills like setting goals, managing time, and preparing financially. Students also get to meet other high school seniors in the program, which makes it easier to share advice, ask questions, and feel supported.
Getting into the program is competitive but straightforward. Students must be high school seniors to have a 3.5 GPA. Admission is by invitation only.
Once invited, students need to commit to meeting with their mentor at least twice a month from November to May. They also have to attend a virtual Meet and Greet, submit a university waiver, a photo release, and a code of conduct signed by a parent or guardian. Students must list Cal Poly as one of their university choices.
For me, the best part of the program is having my mentor, Victoria Philips, who is amazing. She helped me with anything I need, from going over my FASFSA forms to finding links and resources, and she is always ready to answer my questions.
She also gave me advice about who to ask when I need help and helps me feel more confident about college. I feel proud and excited to be part of the program, and it has already taught me so much about preparing for my future.
The Mustang Mentorship Program at Cal Poly SLO is a great way for students to get ready for college. It helps you learn important skills, meet supportive mentors, and connect with other students who are going through the experience. I know from my own experience that this program can really make a difference, and I hope more students take the opportunity to apply and get the same support and knowledge that I have.
