Halloween History and Traditions

Pat Martinez and Ian Jordan

Halloween is a holiday seeped in age-old European traditions. What originally began as an ancient Celtic festival has quickly turned into a holiday celebrated by millions across the world. Originally named “All Hallows Eve,” Halloween was a time when ancient Europeans would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts, but has quickly changed into the holiday we love and celebrate to this day. In other countries, Halloween is celebrated as Day of the Dead which is a time for these cultures to celebrate the lives of their deceased relatives.

Los Banos has been known to have our very own Halloween traditions, such as the trick-or-trunk that the local Church of Latter Day Saints hold annually. Children go car-to-car in the church parking lot instead of house-to-house.  Other fun activities are available through the church on this night too.  Many of the local elementary school also put on a Halloween parade where the elementary kids can show off their costumes.  The Los Banos High school band participates in this activity.
