Day of the Dead Celebrations

Day of the Dead also known as Dia De Los Muertos is a holiday mainly celebrated in Mexico, but also in other countries. This holiday is celebrated on November 1 and November 2. This day is also known as All Saints and All Souls Day with Catholics, but people have combined this with their own beliefs of honoring their past loved ones.

Day of the Dead is joyful time that helps people remember the deceased and their memory. It is not known as a sad and gloomy time; it is more of a festive and happy time. During this holiday, families honor their ancestors but they are also remind themselves that death is just a part of life and it opens up new beginnings for them.

There are many traditions that are associated to this holiday.  Families bring a huge feast to eat while they clean tombstones, sing songs and talk to their ancestors. People set up altars and decorate them with items that their past loved ones liked and even put their favorite foods out on the graves. These activities are done by family members in hopes that their relatives will find their way back to them.

Mexico celebrate through many public displays that people can enjoy. Day of the Dead tends to be more colorful and festive in the southern part of Mexico, particularly in the cities of Michoacan and Oaxaca.

Take time to celebrate the holiday by making your own altar to honor your loved ones who have passed on.
