On Friday, February 23, 2018 the girls gym was converted into a small hospital setup for the annual school blood drive. Student volunteers who made the health requirements and were sixteen or older were pulled out of class to donate blood, capable of saving three lives.

Signups went out several days before, allowing students to decide whether they wanted to offer blood up at all, and if they did, what period would they like to be pulled out of. The signature of a parent or guardian was required for all students regardless of the age of the student. By 8:15, students were already waiting to have their blood taken. This process began with a short pre-screening that ensures the student giving blood will not be in any danger whilst giving blood. Questions included, “When was the last time you ate? Have you traveled out of the country?  Were you in contact with anyone who has a disease?” The pre-screening also ensures that the blood being given is top quality. Any blood diseases automatically disqualify the donor from giving blood.

The turn around rate was quick during the event.  As one student left, another donor would arrive because so many students signed up. “It wasn’t that bad, everything went quickly for me and I was out in time for lunch!” said one of the donors.

The blood would remain flowing until noon.  Each student donor signed the massive poster that hung on the gym wall to record the generous and brave act of giving their blood. Afterward a mandatory rest was set in place for those who had donated their blood. A t-shirt, snacks and drink were offered as well in the rest area before students were sent back to class.
