New Nvidia RTX graphics cards arriving

Eric Macias, Staff Reporter

The new RTX graphics cards are the newest gaming cards from Nvidia since the GTX 1080 Ti release on March 10, 2017.

The cards are said to be shipped on September 20, 2018 which include RTX 2080, 2080 Ti and 2070 . The new 20 series GPU Architecture Turning is said to be between 35 to 45 percent better at roughly the same generation so, 1080 Ti to 2080 Ti. The cards were expected to come for a long time but information about them and what they can actually do in performance to dollar is not released yet.

There is a lot of excitement coming from the PC gaming community on what the cards can do in ray tracing, AI enhanced graphics and more. Most people, including me, are not expecting to make the upgrade right away. With no solid data out yet many are undecided and have mixed feelings about the new 20 series GPUs. For the average PC gamer, price to performance is one of the most important things for this expensive hobby.

Is ray tracing going to be the next best thing in gaming? Ray tracing is nothing new to gaming but is never implemented for the simple reason it’s too hard to run, even some of the most expensive PC rigs have too much trouble running it for the very few games that have it.     Consumers can expect competitive games like Rainbow Six Siege and Battlefield V to take advantage of the new ray tracing technology first and implement them well as a game mechanic of some sort.

“I don’t think for the average consumer the new RTX cards are worth it right now, but time will tell,” said Anthony Torres, 12.

“Even with all the new features on them I’m just going to wait for GTX 1080 to go down in price because all the games I play will not take advantage of these features,” said Michael Cabral, 12.

In retrospect, most companies take a few years to really take advantage of new technology, and by that date the statistics will be readily available for everyone.

Prices are as follows: GEFORCE RTX 2080 Ti FE $1,199; GEFORCE RTX 2080 FE $799; and GEFORCE RTX 2070 FE $599.00.
