Los Banos High School Academic Decathlon Students Win Scholarships

The Academic Decathlon team works hard all year for competition.

Los Banos High School participated on February 2 in the Merced Unified School District’s Academic Decathlon and had several students who placed.  Our school achieved first place Top Middle School.

Following seven quizzes, two speeches, an interview, and a super quiz, the results are as follows:

Mykel Lara (12) got 1st in Science, 2nd in Economics, 2nd in Speech, and 3rd in Literature.

Paulo Campos (12) received 1st for his Essay

Jayson Stevenson (11) got an award for their Mathematics performance

Arturo Fierro (11) placed 3rd in Science

Jimmy Greer (9) 2nd in Music

In addition Sidney Carrigan (12) was the Top Scoring Student on her team.

Three students also won Robert Wayne Scholarships: Jayson Stevenson, Paulo Campos, and Sidney Carrigan. Two of the prizes: those awarded to Paulo and Jayson were for $250, while Sidney received the $500 scholarship.

Carrigan stated, “I highly recommend Academic Decathlon to anyone interested and it’s not as scary as it seems.”

With five seniors on this year’s team, it is crucial that new students join for next year’s team. So, Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors, if interested be sure to check out Academic Decathlon at next year’s club rush if you are interested or see Mr. Reardon in Room 10.
