Movie Review: Dr. Sleep Offers Thrills

Some of us may remember the 1980 film, The Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick. In a nutshell Jack Torrence (Jack Nicholson), his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and their son Danny (Danny Lloyd) move into an isolated overlook hotel in Colorado. Danny is plagued by premonitions and they slowly become more and more disturbing. From Danny´s visions, Jack discovers the dark past of the hotel and turns into a homicidal maniac determined to terrorize his family.

Dr. Sleep, directed by Stephen King, brings the audience back to the present day, where Danny Torrence (Ewan Mcgregor) is struggling with alcoholism. He is still traumatized by the events that took place inside of the Overlook Hotel in Colorado during his childhood .  He hopes to live a peaceful life, but that dream is shattered when he meets Abra (Kyleigh Curran). She is a teen who shared the same extrasensory gift of ¨shine.¨

They band together and form an unlikely partnership to battle the True Knot. A cult whose vampire-like members attempt and feed off the shine of innocent people in an attempt to become immortal. One scene in which the cultists kill a young boy for his powers is fuel for nightmares.

Dr. Sleep has a long run time of two hours and 31 minutes. Despite this long run time, the audience never fells bored or anxious as to when the movie was going to end. There was also some scary scenes in the movie that makes them flinch a little. Overall, Dr. Sleep was a good film.

Dr. Sleep can be viewed at Los Banos Premiere Cinemas.
