Will Halloween be canceled this year, 2020?

The 2020 year has been rough for everyone with many different cancellations of city and county events such as the Merced’s County fair. According to an article printed in the Merced County Times newspaper in April, speculations about canceling Halloween was mentioned.

To many citizens, wondering if their favorite spooky holiday will be canceled is still up in the air.  ABC News tweeted a post of risks, but the global audience seemed to be not supportive of possible cancellation.  Many were outraged.  Actress Amber Smith responded to this tweet, “CDC just cancelled Halloween for kids, but BLM & Antifa riots and protests…. They are of course fine. This two standards of “covid safety” is ridiculous.”  Many responses followed in favor of letting Halloween happen for children.

Kristine Kolenut (11), said, “Halloween to me means change, a change in season and atmosphere. I live for the scary or spooky month. The pumpkin patches, the October spices, the costumes, the videos/movies; I really enjoy the change from summer to the cooler months and holidays are a huge plus!”

Kolenut showed her love for Halloween saying it was more than just a holiday, describing her feelings by saying, “I am a little bummed out if I’m honest, because celebrating with friends is so much fun and Halloween is on a Saturday. I understand the dangers of covid. So I would rather have everyone inside where they can be safe, plus I don’t mind watching scary movies and eating candy till I fall sleep.”

She is not the only one with this attitude.  Junior Annika Stichel also said, “I’m kind of sad about it but I mean bright side is that there’s always next year.” She continued, “I’d be kind of sad, but it makes sense that trick-or-treating would be canceled, however you can still technically dress up.”

Opinions of many other citizens are also circling the web, and even now that this is a tough time for everyone, the saddening news of this year’s Halloween should at least still bring joy, to which @newschambers, Richard Chambers, a news announcer, posted on Twitter, “Micheal Martin says, “Halloween itself isn’t cancelled” but you can’t go knocking on doors. He says there are other ways of enjoying Halloween.”

For those still wanting to go trick-or-treating, the Los Banos Elks Lodge will be hosting a “Trick or Trunk,” a Halloween candy drive-thru, on Saturday October 31, for more information please check out the post down below.
