For Abril Encarnacion, band has been more than just an extracurricular, it’s been the heart of her entire high school experience.
After seven years in band; beginning all the way back in fifth grade, Encarnacion has mastered a range of instruments including the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and percussion. Out of all of them, the flute remains her favorite. “It’s the one I have more experience with. I’ve learned so much about music with my flute, and it’s led me to make a career out of it.” she said.
Looking back, one of Encarnacion’s favorite memories comes from the awards ceremonies after competitions. “It’s so much fun, the music is blasting, and my friends are in the front dancing and running chants. It’s truly a good time.”
Band has shaped nearly every aspect of Encarnacion’s high school life. “Any plans I try to make, I base them around the band calendar. Band is where I spend the most of my time. I’ve given so much dedication to it; my high school life would be completely different without it.”
As graduation approaches, the emotions are bittersweet. “It was very emotional performing for my last time,” Encarnacion shared. “Marching down the street one last time made me appreciate every competition I’ve been in. Putting myself in front of a crowd has really shaped me into the performer I am.”
What Encarnacion will miss the most, though, is the performing itself. “The practices are long but performing always makes up for it. I still remember marching downtown in the Christmas parade and getting chills from the applause. It’s a feeling you don’t get anywhere else.”
Inspired by watching others play, Encarnacion found her own lifelong passion through band and leaves behind a legacy of dedication, spirit, and music that will continue to echo through the halls long after graduation.
