Six BSU members were awarded scholarships after attending the Fresno Black Student College Expo on February 3. The event connected students with Historically Black Colleges and Universities as they had the chance to speak with HBCU representatives.
The scholarships were based on students’ academic records, including their GPA, transcripts, credits and more. Not only did the representatives look into their academic records, but they also spoke to the students and saw who they were as a person.
BSU president Alana Arnold (12) said, “I believe that every BSU member got a scholarship on their merrit and hard work alone. Without those things, I don’t believe that these colleges would offer us these opportunities.”
Along with Arnold, Seniors Kayla Celestine, Carmello Smith, James Jones, Luna Munguia and Ashlynne Cancino also received scholarships. Each student received two full ride scholarships to colleges and universities with additional scholarships.
Students received scholarships that day to John C. Smith University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Livingstone College and Philander Smith University. Upon receiving the scholarships, some members were shocked and enthusiastic as they were awarded financial aid to historic colleges and universities.
BSU member Kayla Celestine (12) said, “I was in utter shock. I couldn’t believe I received these scholarships. My first instinct was to hug my friend Alana Arnold because she also was awarded scholarships and I was so proud of her.”
Along with their excitement, club members shared some advice for other future BSU members. From working hard for these goals and aspirations, to taking every opportunity available, members advise others to be themselves when going to the expo and they’ll come out with great rewards.
Celestine said, “Receiving these was a dream come true for me, I now actually get to attend an HBCU, which has been a dream of mine for years, without the financial stress and worry.”
Behind the successful students, the BSU advisor Ms. Chandra Lee was praised for being a good role model in the club. From helping her members with projects like Mardi Gras grams, to being there in times of need, Lee is known as a great advisor.
Celestine mentioned, “Ms. Lee is an amazing director and looks out for her students and their best interests.”
All students are encouraged to join BSU, to take part in school activities that bring attention to events full of history and more. With hard work and dedication, more members will gain the opportunity to win more scholarships in the future.
