The New Multicultural Dance club is bringing energy through culture to campus. The mission of the club is to celebrate every culture and give people access to dancing. The club is very excited about what is to come for the new year.
Right now, there are two student instructors teaching Arabic and Jalisco-style dancing. However, the club is looking for additional instructors from different backgrounds, who would like to teach their cultural dances. “There are no auditions or requirements to have experience,” according to Club President, Brisa Carillo (11). “Everyone is welcome to join.”
In the future, the club hopes to accomplish even greater things. “We would like for the club to grow so we can add more traditional dances such as folklórico, danza aztecas, bhangra, lion dance, etc.,” Carrillo said, describing her vision of expanding cultural representation on campus.
This year, the club plans to perform at school rallies and any campus events that they are asked to perform at. The club views performance as a way to inspire, not just to entertain. When Carillo started the club, it was because she wanted to help people gain confidence, something that performing had done for her. She said, “It took me a while to get over my social anxiety, but I found that I could do anything I put my mind to.”
She said that she hoped the club could offer people that same opportunity. She also added, “When we are all done with everything, it will be worth it.” She encouraged students to take a chance and step outside their comfort zone.
Some of the leaders of the club include: President Brisa Carillo, Vice President Marlen Martinez, Secretary Clarissa Barba, Media Producer & Coordinator Isabella Vasquez, and Advisors Miss Mina and Miss Anguiano.
If you are interested in joining the club, you can visit either Ms. Anguiano’s or Ms. Mina’s room. Typically, meetings are held on Wednesdays during lunch if necessary. The club also has an Instagram account, @lbhs.dance, and are creating posters promoting the club around campus.
So if you’re feeling a little groovy, you know where to go.
