The Super Bowl was held in Las Vegas, Nevada in Allegiant Stadium. The game kicked off at 3:30 p.m. sharp Pacific time.
The game started very slowly but entertaining due to the fact that both running backs on both teams fumbled the ball putting them at a disadvantage to potentially score. Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter.
In the beginning of the second quarter the 49ers were the first team to put points on the board by kicker, Jake Moody, scoring a 55 yard field goal to put them up, 3-0. Later on in the second quarter the 49ers scored a touchdown by a trick play. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw a pass to running back, Christian McCaffrey, for a 21 yard passing touchdown. The 49ers put a huge gap between them and the Chiefs by being up, 10-0. However, right before the quarter ended the Chiefs were able to at least put up a 28 yard field goal to cut the lead by seven heading into halftime, 10-3.
The Chiefs opened up the third quarter with the ball first and on the third play of the second half quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, threw an interception giving the 49ers the ball with good field position to score. However, the 49ers couldn’t execute keeping the score the same. Later on in the quarter the Chiefs managed to get another three points by a 57 yard field goal by Harrison Butker, cutting the lead to just four points, 10-6.
Then just as the 49ers felt comfortable with the lead a miscue occurred on special teams giving the Chiefs the ball back. On the first play of the drive Patrick Mahomes threw a 16 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver, Marques Valdes-Scantling, to go up, 13-10. The 49ers wasted no time and responded by a Brock Purdy touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings putting them up only 16-13 due to another special teams miscue. The Chiefs tied it back up with another field goal making it 16-16. It was coming down to a nail biter, but both teams failed to take a lead in regulation, 19-19.
This game needed to be decided, so overtime was needed to decide the Vince Lombardi winner. This was the second game ever to go into overtime in the history of the super bowl. The 49ers decided to receive the ball first after winning the coin flip to start overtime. The 49ers looked very strong on their drive but the team could not manage to score a touchdown. They settled for three points, 22-19.
The Chiefs get an opportunity to close out the game with their drive by scoring a touchdown and that is what they did. Right before the overtime clock expired, Patrick Mahomes threw a three yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman for the game winner.
The Chiefs became back-to-back Super Bowl Champions for the first time since the 03-04 New England Patriots and look to be the first team to ever win the Super Bowl three years in a row next year.
