Watching Christmas movies and listening to holiday music is a staple part of the season. A poll taken by a total of 119 students reveals which movies and songs are most popular.
With only one vote pushing it into the first place position, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas takes the cake as the most loved Christmas movie from the sample. The Grinch got 24 votes, meaning about every one in five people who took the poll voted for it.
Second place went to Home Alone, with 23 votes. The Polar Express took third, collecting 20 votes. It was a close race, which only shows that there is a wide array of beloved Christmas movies.
There were some well-known holiday movies that didn’t gather as many votes, such as
Elf with only 7 votes and The Christmas Chronicles with only 5 votes. Home Alone’s sequel did far worse than the original, getting only 8 votes.
The same gap between first and second place occurs with songs, with second place merely one vote short of the crown. First place went to “Last Christmas” by Wham!. Gaining 18 votes, it proves to be a very popular song during the holiday season.
In second place, with 17 votes, was “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey. In third was “Jingle Bells,” having collected 13 votes. Obviously there was more discourse between songs than there were towards movies, with plenty of scattered votes for more niche, less known songs.
Some examples of these niche picks include “Leroy the Redneck Reindeer” and “Christmas Saves the Year,” both of which got one vote.
USA Today released their own ranking of the best Christmas movies, with the 1988 film Scrooged topping the leaderboard. In the poll used for this article, not one person voted for this film.
Billboard’s Holiday 100 showed “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and “Last Christmas” as the two most popular songs. This isn’t much different from the poll, other than the fact that the two switched placements.
Christmas movies and songs are two of the most vital aspects of the holiday season, so it is no surprise that not everyone can agree on an ultimate ‘best.’ They are a special part of Christmas, each with their own story and fanbase.
