ChatGPT is changing how students approach learning, homework, and studying. Some students use it to better understand difficult subjects, while others rely on it mainly to complete tasks more quickly.

Jazzmin Ponce (12) explained that ChatGPT has helped her organize and study material more efficiently. She uses it to create outlines and simplify notes, which saves time and helps her focus on key concepts. However, she admitted that she sometimes depends on it more for answers than for fully understanding the material. Ponce believes that with proper rules, ChatGPT could be responsibly used in schools, similar to calculators or translation tools.

Quetzal Macedo (11) shared that ChatGPT allows her to tackle challenging subjects without having to ask teachers for help. She uses it to break down complex topics and generate ideas, especially when writing essays or starting assignments. While it helps her think critically at times, she also acknowledges that ChatGPT is a shortcut for finishing busywork more quickly.

Math teacher Mr. Spivey, who also teaches graduate students how to use ChatGPT responsibly, sees both benefits and risks in the technology. He has noticed students increasingly relying on ChatGPT for answers instead of understanding the structure of problems. “ChatGPT can support learning if it’s used properly, but it can hinder learning if it’s relied on for everything,” he said. 

Spivey emphasizes that teaching students to use ChatGPT to analyze mistakes, understand problem-solving steps, and deepen comprehension can turn it into a powerful educational tool rather than just a shortcut.

ChatGPT is impacting students’ lives in multiple ways. It provides efficiency, accessibility, and support for learning, but it can also encourage overreliance and shortcuts. With proper guidance, instruction, and school protocols, ChatGPT has the potential to enhance learning rather than replace it.
