A new chapter is beginning for many seniors this year in June. Joshua Gargano (12) has officially committed to Sierra College in Rocklin, California, where he plans to continue his football career while preparing to be a fire fighter.
Gargano chose Sierra College because of what it had to offer for him. The perfect mix of athletics and academics. He said, “I chose it for their football and firefighter program.”
Once on campus he plans to play football and work towards earning his degree in fire technology.
Gargano realized this was the school for him during his official visit. He said, “I realized this is the school I wanted to go to when I took my official visit and saw the school in person.”
He talks about how the experience there helped him picture himself attending Sierra College not just as a student, but as part of a team and community.
Gargano explains committing has brought excitement and a feeling of support. He said, “I felt really good about committing. The coaches and the players welcomed me in and made me feel like family.” That supportive environment played a big role in Gargano’s decision.
Throughout the committing process he has had many support systems, the biggest one being his mom. He said, “My mom was my biggest support when it came down to choosing.” He knew no matter what decision he chose he’d have his mom on his side.
Gargano also wants to credit his high school experience and coaches for helping him prepare for his next big step. Coaches Dustin Caropreso, Dasani Tate, and especially David Snapp guided him along the way making a lasting impact.
While excited about his decision he notices the decision came with a challenge. He said, “My biggest challenge was leaving my family behind. I don’t want to go too far from them.”
Aside from the challenges Gargano is looking ahead and ready to continue playing football at the college level. His goals for the next four years are to balance playing football with his academic goal. He said,” I hope to be a certified firefighter when football is over.”
Reflecting on how far Gargano has come he offers advice to younger students “Enjoy the time you have in high school, but use it wisely.” He also reflects on wishing he would have started the application process sooner and not letting it pile on him last minute.
Now that he has officially committed he’s ready to take on what comes next. “I feel excited and good now that my next chapter in life is beginning,” he said.
Make sure to congratulate Gargano on committing to Sierra College and starting his next big steps in life.
