After and exciting weekend competition on October 18 at Santa Cruz, our school band proudly took home second place. Among the dedicated members celebrating this achievement is Isabel de Melo (12), a talented musician who has been deeply involved in band for years.
“One thing that got me involved in band were my parents. My dad was a trumpet player and my mom was a clarinet player who also did color guard. I always wanted to be a part of the marching band, just like they were,” de Melo shared.
de Melo’s musical journey began in fifth grade with the clarinet. Over the years, she’s mastered several instruments, including clarinet, trombone, cymbals, and mallet percussion. “Sophomore year I started to learn trombone for our jazz band, and lastly, mallet percussion for concert band. The parts for mallet percussion are so exciting; they made me love playing them.”
Her passion for music extends beyond school. “I am currently in a Portuguese marching band, Lira Acoriana,” she said. “I plan to go to school for music as a future career!”
de Melo also takes pride in helping others. “I’ve had many opportunities to mentor and help younger band members,” she explained. “Whether it’s during class, pride time, or even practice, I love helping them when they don’t understand a part.”
When asked about her biggest influences, she didn’t hesitate. “My dad’s passion for music inspired me even when I was younger. He’s in the Portuguese marching band with me and plays euphonium. My biggest supporters, though, are definitely my parents. No matter the day, time, or weather, they always show up to all of my performances. I’m so lucky to have such supportive parents.”
With her dedication, talent, and family support, it’s no wonder de Melo and the rest of the band continue to shine in every performance they give. Congratulations again to the band on their amazing second place win!
