The Los Banos Tigers are entering this basketball season with high energy and even higher expectations. After a summer filled with intense workouts, team bonding, and a renewed sense of focus, the Tigers are looking to make a strong statement in league play.
Much of that confidence centers around two key players Carmelo Smith and Eric Ramos who are expected to lead both on and off the court.
Head coach Gonzalo Rodriguez said this year’s group feels different. “You can sense the maturity in this team,” Rodriguez explained. “ Carmelo and Eric have stepped up in a big way as leaders. They’re holding each other accountable, and that attitude has spread throughout the locker room.”
Carmelo Smith (12), the Tigers’ high flying forward, has become the emotional spark and scoring powerhouse for the team. Known for his athletic drives to the rim and clutch shooting, Smith spent the offseason improving his outside shot and leadership skills. “Last year we came close in a lot of games,” Smith said, “this season, it’s about finishing strong and playing as one unit. I want to leave it all on the court every night.”
Meanwhile, Eric Ramos (12), the Tiger senior point guard, serves as the floor general, a calm, steady presence who keeps the offense moving and defense locked in. Ramos said the team chemistry is at an all-time high. “We trust each other,” Ramos said. “Every guy knows his role. Our goal isn’t just to win games; it’s to play Tiger basketball fast, fearless, and together.”
Coach Rodriguez agrees that the team’s unity will be their biggest strength. “We’ve got guys who can score, defend, and hustle,” he said. “But more than that we’ve got heart. That’s what makes this team special.”
The Tigers are also getting contributions from a deep supporting cast. Younger players like Mikey Pereira (11) and Jayden Howard (11) have impressed the team and coaches last year, bringing energy off the bench and adding depth to the lineup.
As the season tips off, the Tigers know the road ahead won’t be easy. Rival matchups against Merced Bears and El Capitan gauchos will test their discipline and toughness. Still, the team remains focused on their ultimate goal: a deep playoff run.
“We’ve been grinding since day one,” Smith said with a smile. “This year, we’re ready to show everyone what Los Banos basketball is all about.”
With passion, leadership, and determination driving them, the Los Banos Tigers are ready to roar louder than ever. The Tigers first game is against their crosstown rivals Pacheco High School on November 18 at Pacheco High School.
