With the second year under the new coaching staff, the wrestling program is off to a strong start. On the first day of practice, approximately 70 athletes showed up, only about a third of them returning wrestlers.
Because of the large number of newcomers, the first week focused on fundamentals and introducing new wrestlers to the program. However, several returning athletes are confident that the new group is picking things up quickly and that the team has an exciting season ahead.
Michael Coelho, (11) a four-year wrestler, shared his goal for the season: “My goal this year is to make it to state.” Coelho narrowly missed qualifying for state last year after competing at the Masters tournament, the final qualifier before state.
Zander Gonzalez, (12) who has wrestled for five years, has similarly high ambitions. “I plan to make it to and win the state this year,” he said. Gonzalez and his teammates believe that with their coaches’ diligence and knowledge, every goal they’ve set is within reach.
Alysianna Salas, (10) added, “I feel like our team will do well this season since we have a lot of returning players as well as great coaches to help out in the room.” Salas had an impressive freshman year and credits last year’s coaching staff for her success. She plans to continue improving every day with the goal of reaching state.
Every athlete is excited and motivated as the season begins, entering the wrestling room each day with determination and focus. The team’s first meet of the season will take place on November 21–22 at Ceres High School.
