The Lady Tigers ended their flag football season on a high note during Senior Night, honoring three standout seniors in a thrilling showdown against El Capitan. Co-Captain Sara Almanza (12), Devanie Vargas (12), and Victoria De La Torre (12) were recognized for their leadership, skill, and dedication both on and off the field.
The players also made their mark through versatility on the field: Almanza #99 played defensive back, rusher, and middle, De La Torre #29 played safety, center, blocker, and rusher, while Vargas #5 rotated between safety, wing defense, and fullback. Their versatile contributions were key to the Lady Tigers’ success this season.
The seniors had impressive stats this season. Vargas led the team with 4 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, De La Torre recorded 3 sacks and 16 tackles, and Almanza contributed 2 interceptions, 1 assist, and 2 sacks, anchoring the defense and providing steady leadership.
Vargas, who played safety, and fullback, reflected on her time with the team. She said, “It’s sad and I wish I could’ve played longer. Senior night was good, and the highlight of the season was when we were down by 20 and came back to win in the last half.”
Head Coach Jones expressed pride in the seniors and the growth of the team. “I was extremely excited about coaching flag football when I was hired,” he said. “My goal was to preserve the program, teach team unity, and show how flag football continues to grow. Watching players develop from shy beginners to confident athletes is one of the reasons I love coaching. Senior night was a special time for me, the players, and their families.”
Coach Jones also shared a lighthearted memory from the final practice. “All the players dressed up like me, hats, beards, durags, and great impersonations. I felt honored and we had a lot of laughs. At the start of the season, the team was fractured, but I kept pushing the theme ‘One band, one sound,’ which helped bring everyone together.”
Senior night was not only a celebration of the Lady Tigers’ accomplishments on the field but also a reflection of the dedication, teamwork, and memories these three seniors leave behind for the program.
