Girls’s Soccer season is getting started with conditioning and tryouts having taken place the first two weeks of November. Official season games start early January, but preseason games take place before that, with the first one on Nov 18 against Pacheco for both JV and Varsity.
Girls’ soccer sees a change this season with a set of four new coaches. The try outs were filled with mostly returning players, but also a few new faces. All together there were roughly 50 girls trying out for JV and Varsity.
“I hope to get better at my footwork and just my skills overall”, Sofia Franco (11) said when asked about her spaces of improvement for her junior season. “I want to really improve on my defense and get better throw-ins”, she further explained.
This is the third year of high school soccer for JV player Franco. She is excited to be able to play league games again. Her main goal for this season is to train hard in order to get as much playing time as possible.
“I hope to bring her strengths of being a team player and communicating with the girls to the team,” Franco stated. She wants to encourage her teammates to be the best they can as a team by communicating with each other.
According to center back Kirsten Carrillo (12), tryouts were filled with excitement for the season as well as joy for being able to play together again with familiar faces. During conditioning and tryouts the coaches got to see how well each individual does with running, dribbling and different drills.
Carrillo has been playing soccer since the age of three. With her last year of high school soccer she wants to help her teammates feel motivated with her perseverant mindset of not giving up. As a senior Carrillo plans to prioritize having fun with her teammates and just trying her best.
Carrillo shared her source of motivation for soccer. “I love soccer and I am passionate about doing well, so that mindset really keeps me motivated,” Carrillo said. Carrillo looks up to all the national women’s soccer teams. She is inspired by the talented young women who play on the national level.
“At the moment I think my biggest concern is my stamina but I think that will move over soon as we practice more and more”, Carrillo stated as her field of improvement for the upcoming season.
Practice is in full swing as the teams prepare for the preseason games. Franco and Carrillo look forward to what this season has to offer for JV and Varsity.
