The girls varsity basketball team entered the CCC season focused on improvement after a mixed start, using early losses as learning opportunities while preparing for key league matchups through defense, leadership, and team chemistry.
Despite a rough tournament performance, the team responded with a strong showing against Patterson after struggling the previous day. The team also earned wins earlier in the season, demonstrating its ability to compete when executing its game plan. These early games provided experience that helped prepare the team for CCC.
Brooke Barton (11), a returning varsity player, said the team stayed focused on growth rather than results early in the season. “Although we have lost a few games, it’s still early on in the season, and we can use those losses as learning opportunities,” Barton said.
Barton stood out defensively and on the boards while also taking on a leadership role by encouraging teammates to stay confident. One of the team’s early highlights occurred during the Chowchilla game when Avery Vierra (11) made two three-pointers, reflecting the results of consistent effort in practice. Barton also pointed Zoey Canchola (11), Siena Freitas (11), and Devanie Vargas (12) as teammates who consistently maintained positive attitudes during challenging moments.
Canchola recently joined varsity after playing JV last season and adjusted to a faster pace of play. She said learning new plays and running them at game speed helped her handle increased pressure and improve both offensively and defensively. “These first few games have helped me grow as a player by teaching me how to play under more pressure,” Canchola said.
Coach Lorena Sanchez, said her expectations for the CCC season included finishing in the top three of the league and returning to the playoffs. She identified Barton’s defensive play and rebounding, Kanin Welch (12) offensive leadership, and Freitas’ strong start before an ankle injury as key contributors. “We’re focusing on defense so we can compete,” Sanchez said.
Looking ahead, matchups against Merced and El Capitan were identified as important tests as the team worked toward a competitive CCC season. The next home game is January 7 2026.
