With track season approaching, athletes are beginning to prepare for another busy and competitive year. Conditioning is expected to start sometime in February, with official practice beginning shortly after. Practices are typically held after school at 4 p.m., and like previous seasons, there are usually no tryouts, though this can change depending on the head coach.
This year, the team will be guided by a new head captain, who will be receiving support from former head captain Mr. Salaz. Salaz’s experience is expected to help the team transition smoothly into the new season. The program is also looking into bringing in new coaches, possibly for throwing events, as coaching staff has changed frequently over the past few seasons.
Athletes compete in a wide range of events, allowing them to explore what best suits their strengths. Some runners and field athletes participate in events such as hurdles and discus. Many athletes try multiple events before settling on the ones they enjoy and perform best in.
Practices have taken place at different locations over the years. The team practiced at Pacheco High School for a couple of seasons and returned to the home track last year after it was remodeled. However, the team is unable to host meets at Loftin Stadium due to a missing running lane. Because of this, home meets are hosted at Pacheco High School instead.
Additionally, the stadium is separate from the main campus, requiring throwers to walk to a different area for discus and shot put. During practice, athletes often use a shortcut through the back gates to reach the throwing area more efficiently.
Competition season includes several CCC league meets, scheduled for March 11, March 25, April 15, and the CCC Championships on April 29. Meets are typically all-day events due to the large number of teams and athletes competing across many events.
Each season can feel different, as rules and expectations vary depending on the head coach. For example, attendance policies regarding tardies and absences may affect an athlete’s ability to remain on the team.
With conditioning starting soon and the season quickly approaching, athletes are preparing for long practices, competitive meets, and another exciting year of track and field. For any questions or concerns, contact Mr. Salaz in room 406.
