The LB Tigers officially kicked off basketball season on January 14, starting league play for all levels.
The team played their first game on the road against Merced on Jan 13 and then faced another tough conference opponent at home on Jan 15. Starting the season against the projected No. 1 Merced and No. 2 Atwater teams in the Central California Conference (CCC) is a big challenge, but it’s also a good way to see how the season might go for the Tigers.
Team captain Eric Ramos (12) knows how important these first games are. “Starting the season with these two teams back to back will shape us for the rest of the season,” Ramos said. “Win or lose, the team knows we will improve from these two games, which can help us potentially win against every other team.”
The boys varsity team has a lot to prove this year. Even though they were predicted to finish last in their division, the Tigers are determined to surprise everyone. A strong start could set the tone for the season, while early losses would make the road ahead even tougher in a competitive conference.
Senior Jayden Howard is confident in the team’s abilities. “I’m expecting a winning season because we’re confident in ourselves,” Howard said. “We’re hungry and want to be the best. If we lose, we can come back in the next game. Every game feels like a playoff game because they all matter for making the playoffs.”
The Tigers are coming into the season motivated and ready to work hard. With a varsity team full of experienced seniors and more than half the team leaving next year, this season is extra important. The challenges will be big, but the Tigers are ready to rise to the occasion and make a mark in the CCC. Will they be able to beat Golden Valley on Jan 21? We will wait and see.
