As hardworking as students have to be, there are still some things that students wish teachers understood more when assigning homework.
Teachers need to remember that students are not robots and cannot all work at the same level. Some students work at a slower pace while others can work faster and multi-task. However, just because students have the ability to complete assignments, doesn’t mean they don’t stress trying to understand how to do the work itself. Some subjects can be very complicated and confusing like math and physics.
Luis Tejeda (12th), believes that teachers don’t understand how stressful it is as a student to have to complete a variety of assignments from six different classes at the same time. “Other classes could also be assigning us a lot of homework, and if the homework is stuff we haven’t been taught yet, in detail, it can stress people out. Especially those who want good grades.” he explains.
Tejeda claims to be struggling in math, which results in lack of motivation to complete any other assignments. “I get confused with the formulas, especially when we switch units quickly.” Not only is having a lot of homework stressful enough, he stated that switching units too quickly is also the problem.
Crystal Reyes (11th), claims that school is too rushed which limits the amount of time to learn. “I feel that schools switch units too quickly, it’s hard to learn when the units are being rushed,” said Reyes. She also explained “We don’t always have time to do homework, people have busy lives which can also make people depressed with all the stress.” Reyes believes that homework takes away time from being with family and leads to mental health issues.
By and large, homework should be limited and less complicated so students can understand what is being taught.
