The Los Banos boys varsity basketball team is determined to exceed expectations and earn a playoff spot despite a current record of 1–6. And an overall record of 10-11 setting them under .500.
With several tough matchups ahead, the Tigers are preparing to face strong opponents such as Merced, Buhach, El Capitan, and Golden Valley. One of their biggest challenges came on February 4, going against league-leading Merced, with the overall score being 72-58 Merced. This game gave the Tigers an opportunity not only to win the rematch, but also to upset the top team in the CCC League.
Head coach Gonzalo Rodriguez remains confident in his team’s potential. “I’m very confident in our capability to upset some teams as we are underdogs for these next four games,” Rodriguez said. “We have a lot of talent on this roster, but it often shows individually rather than as a team. My goal is to go far with this group because of the special bond I have with them.”
Team chemistry has been a challenge this season, according to players and coaches. Senior captain Eric Ramos shared his perspective on the issue. “Our biggest problem is trusting each other and the coaches,” Ramos said. “During practice, there’s a lot of arguing and not enough trust in what the coaches are trying to teach us.”
With critical games approaching, the Tigers must decide whether they can come together as a team or continue to struggle under pressure. Over the next two weeks, Los Banos has a chance to prove they can overcome adversity, embrace the underdog role, and continue their playoff push in an upcoming road matchup against Golden Valley.
