As winter sports wrap up and playoff seasons for girls varsity basketball and boys varsity soccer come to a close, a new chapter begins for student-athletes: the start of track and field. The season officially kicked off on February 10, welcoming runners, jumpers, and throwers back to the track after the conclusion of their winter commitments. With the new season also comes new leadership, as Mr. Juju Jones steps in as the team’s head coach.
Long-distance coach Michael Salaz shared his excitement about the upcoming season and the talent joining the program. “I’m very excited for this upcoming season,” Salaz said. “We’re bringing in new kids from all different grades and from other sports. This season can be an unforgettable one with the talent we hold. This year we are taking it much more seriously, which will help us improve as a team. We are here to compete with the rest of the CCC and put in all the work we can.”
The Tigers are determined to make their mark in the league. Along with a new head coach, the team has added another key figure to the coaching staff. Football lineman coach “Coach Mitch” has been assisting with strength training in the weight room, focusing especially on developing the throwers’ power and intensity. His addition has brought renewed energy and high expectations for the season.
Senior runner Raul Diaz (12) also expressed optimism about what lies ahead. “This season is going to be a very fun one with friends and new coaches,” Diaz said. “We have a lot of work to put in, especially for runners who didn’t do any winter sports — myself included. I have a lot of work to do to catch up. But we have talent in all aspects: running, jumping, throwing, and all other events.”
With a strong mix of returning athletes, newcomers, and dedicated coaches, the Tigers appear ready to compete at a high level. Their hard work and preparation will first be put to the test at their scrimmage meet on February 24 at Pacheco High School. As the season begins, the team looks poised to showcase its talent across all events and set the tone for a competitive year ahead.
