The cheer program held tryouts from February 18–20, bringing together athletes for three days of learning and performance. Participants were taught a dance routine, a cheer, stunting, and a jump clinic before final selections were made.
After evaluations, one team of 30 athletes earned a spot on the sideline squad for the upcoming season. Many returning and new athletes described the process as both challenging and exciting.
“Going into tryouts, I felt confident as it is my third year trying out, and I always love seeing the new girls trying out for their freshman year,” said Brianna Reyna (10). She added that the environment helped her stay motivated throughout the week.
The multi-day format allowed athletes time to practice material and improve before their final performance. It also gave coaches a chance to evaluate teamwork, timing, and overall spirit.
“Going into tryouts I felt both excitement and nervousness,” said Ava Garcia (10). She explained that waiting for her turn to perform in front of the judges was the most difficult part.
Preparation played a major role for many athletes, with time spent reviewing motions, jumps, and choreography between sessions. The clinic structure helped athletes focus on specific skills each day.
“The hardest part about tryouts was special talents because tumbling can be hard on my wrist,” Reyna said. She noted that practicing the dance and cheer every few hours helped her feel ready.
Many cheerleaders said that working together and supporting each other made tryouts easier. They enjoyed helping each other while learning new moves.
“My advice to incoming freshmen is to be open to feedback and support your teammates,” Garcia said. She added that improving stunts is one of her main goals for the season.
The head coach Gabriela Andrada, said she looks for athletes who are coachable, committed, and accountable, with strong fundamentals and positive attitudes. “I’m excited to see the team come together and represent LBHS with pride this season,” she said.
With the team now selected, athletes are turning their focus to building skills and strengthening bonds. The program hopes the energy from tryouts will carry into a successful year on the sidelines.
