The track and field team started the season by participating in a scrimmage that was hosted February 24 at Pacheco High School.
The track team participated in the scrimmage with the primary goal of evaluation and gaining experience. The coaches wanted the athletes to become familiar with the structure and flow of a meet, work through early-season nerves, and establish baseline marks. For the coaches it was important to use this opportunity to get the jitters out while continuing to prepare for league competition.
“Although it was a scrimmage, all levels performed exceptionally well, given the practice we have had thus far. More importantly, we gathered solid preseason times and marks to build from. A few athletes exceeded expectations, particularly those trying new events, which was encouraging and helped us determine what events to place athletes in,” stated Mr. Michael Salaz, Track and Field coach.
In the scrimmage, the athletes demonstrated their strong early-season focus, however coaches remain focused on steady improvement and preparation for the league meets. While highlighting the importance of growth, development, and being ready when it matters most.
“My goal for this season is to reach a PR of 30-32” for shot put and to maybe go to sectionals!,” stated Alana Arnold (12).
The scrimmage helped set the tone for the season by ensuring that athletes are able to compete at a high level. It also gave new athletes and returning athletes meet-day experience and understanding check-in procedures, event timing, and managing warm-ups. The scrimmage offered familiarity that will help the team stay composed and execute better in future events.
“We would also like to thank Pacheco High School for hosting the scrimmage and providing a great opportunity for our athletes to compete,” stated Mr. Salaz.
The next meet for the season is the league opener at Golden Valley High School on March 11.
