With the track and field season underway, a senior athlete prepares to make his final year be one to remember.
Diego Gonzalez (12) is known for his positive attitude both in the classroom and track. He has been a part of the track team since his freshman year. He stays focused on his schoolwork while giving his full effort to track, showing strong discipline and dedication in everything he sets his mind in.
“I set a road map for my goals and take it one step at a time so I can stay focused and reach success,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez decided to join track as a way to stay more active and challenge himself to improve. Through training and competition he has been able to build both physical strength and perseverance.
“I chose track because it challenged me to gain experience and continue growing as an athlete,” he said.
One of his favorite parts of track is the thrill that comes with running, whether it’s during practice or in a competition. He also values the support from his teammates and coaches, whose encouragement motivates him to go beyond his limit.
“The sense of teamwork and shared energy has made the sport both exciting and meaningful for me throughout the season,” he said.
Being a student athlete comes with challenges that often go unseen. Balancing early morning practices, long afternoons of training, and the demands of school requires discipline and sacrifice.
As graduation approaches, stress can begin to build. The pressure of performing well academically while staying competitive on the track can weigh heavily on a student. Gonzales, like many other seniors, finds himself juggling assignments, expectations and the responsibility of planning for life after high school.
“This really takes a toll on you, there are days when stress from school, practice and personal things pile up, but you gotta push through it because you don’t want to let anyone down,” he said.
Despite the challenges, sports have played a positive role in his life. Through athletics, he has learned resilience, discipline, and how to handle stress, while finding support from his teammates and coaches.
In the end, the experience has helped shape him into a stronger and more confident individual.
