Boys volleyball began their season with a varsity scrimmage against Pacheco on Feb. 17. Varsity ended the night with a loss to the Pacheco Panthers.
This year, the team doesn’t have any official preseason games. Instead, there are scrimmages to prepare before the league begins.
The official league will begin on March 17 with an away game against Golden Valley High School. As of 2024, volleyball, as well as other sports, were moved from the Western Athletic Conference League to the Central California Conference League.
Varsity libero Kavin Parreira (12) said, “Our team standing during league could be better before we switched to the CCC we dominated. Last year we didn’t win a single game except for pre-season games, but it’s okay it’s never only about winning.”
The team will continue playing in scrimmages against other schools such as the away at Pacheco on March 5. The Tigers left with another loss with a score of 0-3 to the Panthers.
The coaches are working with players during these early scrimmages to help the teams improve and prepare for the league ahead. The varsity team is currently coached by Tracey and Deborah Alvarez, while J.V. is coached by Sharene Parreira.
As a senior, Parreira will play his final season after spending the past ten years involved in the sport. While the season brings excitement, it also comes with some emotions as he and other seniors prepare to say goodbye to the game.
“I feel very emotional this season, especially with it being my last,” Parreira said. “Other than that, I’m excited for what this season is going to bring.”
He also shared advice for students interested in playing volleyball in the future. Practicing as much as possible, even outside of team practices, is one of the biggest differences a player can make.
Parreira said, “The best advice I can give is to practice whenever you can. Hit the ball against a wall, practice with family, or even by yourself. We all have to start somewhere.”
As the season continues and the leagues approaches, the team hopes to grow and learn from their scrimmages and build confidence for the rest of the year.
