The baseball team is preparing for the start of its official league season on March 16. The preseason started on Feb. 5 with a game against Turlock. Even though Turlock won, the team has kept practicing and preparing.
The next game will be on March 16 against Golden Valley in Merced. This game will be the first official league game of the season. The team is coached by Ernie Lugo, Kody Cardoza, and Manny Fierro, who help the players improve and stay focused during the season.
The season will last until the first of May. For eight seniors, this year is special because it is their final season playing high school baseball. Most of the seniors have been playing since their freshman year, and over the years they have grown both as athletes and as teammates. Through practices, games, and tough tournaments, they have learned how to work together and support each other.
The seniors have built strong friendships during their time on the team. They support and help one another get better, whether it is with batting, fielding, or cheering each other on during games. The seniors also help guide the younger players and show them the importance of teamwork and hard work. As the season continues, the seniors want to finish strong and enjoy their last season playing together as a team.
Jesse Vasquez (12) said, “It feels bittersweet because I grew up playing this sport and I love it.”
The team has usually done well during league games and often gets close to making the playoffs each year. Players say some of their favorite memories are the moments in the dugout after big plays, when everyone is excited and cheering for each other.
Vasquez shared some advice for younger players, “Always give 100 percent while playing. The coaches are always watching, and working hard to help you improve and succeed in the program for years to come.”
The team will continue with practices as they come closer to competing against others in the Central California Conference League.
