Junior Michael Coelho has made a name for himself this year, finishing as one of the top three wrestlers on campus. For Coelho, the recognition is the result of years of steady effort, discipline, and commitment to improving every time he steps on the mat.
Wrestling has been his main focus for the past four years, but he doesn’t limit himself to just one sport. Coelho also competes in football and swimming, showing his versatility as an athlete and his willingness to stay active year-round. “My main sport is wrestling,” Coelho said. “Some other sports I do are football and swimming.”
His schedule is anything but light. Between practices, competitions, and training, Coelho still maintains an impressive 4.3 GPA. The balance doesn’t come easily, but he’s learned how to make the most of his time. “Balancing sports and academics is very difficult,” Coelho said. “But what I do is when I have time I focus on the homework and get it done.”
Preparation is a major part of his success. Coelho spends time lifting weights to build strength and dedicates hours in the wrestling room sharpening his technique. “To train for my sport I lift weights and spend a lot of time in the wrestling room practicing my technique,” he said. It’s a routine that requires consistency and focus, especially during the long season.
After four years in the sport, one year in middle school and just finishing his third year in high school, he has developed not only his skills but also his mindset. “I have been wrestling for four years now,” he said, reflecting on the time and effort he’s invested.
His hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed by those around him. Head Wrestling Coach Larry Borelli praised both his athletic and academic dedication. “Michael is truly an exceptional student who always pushes to excel and stand out both on the mat and in the classroom,” Borelli said.
Looking back on his journey so far, Coelho keeps his advice simple for younger athletes, “Always work hard.” It’s a mindset that has helped him grow into one of the top competitors at his school and continues to push him toward even greater goals.
After such a successful season he said, “I fell short this year but it has only made my goal of placing at State championships more desirable.”
Coelho can’t wait to start his final season next year, but for now, he’s busy training to reach that goal.
