Red Ribbon week is annually celebrated in school across the United States. This year Red Ribbon Week was celebrated on Oct. 23-31 to promote drug prevention across all age categories. On campus the Wellness Club is in charge of Red Ribbon Week and this year they promoted its importance through dress up days that the whole club planned altogether. The dress up days began on Oct. 27 and will continue until Oct. 31. All students can participate on this week’s dress up days, in fact they are encouraged to.
The Red Ribbon Week dress up days consisted of the following: Monday: Put drugs to sleep, wear your PJ’s; Tuesday: Be the type who says no to drugs, dress as your type; Wednesday: Fake words, real choices, white lies; Thursday: Pledge to be drug free, wear cardinal and gold; Friday: Scare away drugs, wear your costume.
“The Wellness Club’s goal in promoting Red Ribbon Week is to encourage the youth to be drug free,” said Joanna Silva (12), the Wellness Club’s President.
The Wellness Club has also promoted Red Ribbon week by tying red ribbons around trees and by hanging posters both printed and hand made around school grounds. Other schools in town such as Mercy Springs Elementary and Westside Elementary are also celebrating and promoting Red Ribbon Week by putting up banners and tying red ribbons around trees on and outside of their campuses.
“It’s important to promote Red Ribbon Week by doing these kinds of things because it educates the youth about drug use and its effects,” stated Silva.
The Wellness Club is always striving to promote wellness and create a positive environment at school in which they can support others and bring awareness to students about real life health problems. In fact the Red Ribbon Week wasn’t the only thing the Wellness Club promoted. Earlier this month they supported the promoted breast cancer awareness by encouraging students to wear pink on Wednesdays in the month of October.
