This winter has brought unusually low temperatures to Los Banos, surprising students and staff who are used to the town’s typically warm weather. According to recent local forecasts, morning temperatures have dropped into the low 30s and 40s, which is colder than the average winter temperatures for this time of year. At Los Banos High School, the sudden chill has become a major topic of conversation, especially during early morning classes and outdoor activities.
Senior Carmello Smith admits the cold has been a shock daily routine. “Man, I wasn’t built for this weather,” Smith said with a laugh. “ I step outside and instantly regret it. I’m shivering before I even get to my car. But I’ll admit, it wakes me up faster than anything else.” He added that the cold is something else he says even with one jacket it is still cold.
Special education teacher Carlos has noticed the same pattern inside his classroom. He said, “Students walk in looking frozen, but it actually gives them something to bond over. They complain together, laugh about it together, and somehow that builds community.” He also mentioned that indoor areas have become more crowded during breaks, with students choosing warmth over walking around campus.
Senior Alex Vanderveen sees the cold weather as a refreshing change. “Honestly, I kind of like the cold,” Vanderveen said. “Los Banos is always hot, so this gives the school a fresh vibe. Everyone’s wearing beanies, gloves, and big jackets. It feels like we’re in the mountains instead of the valley.” Even he admits, however, that wearing outside before first period can feel like the coldest and longest part of the day.
While the cold spell may not last long, it has definitely made an impact on student life at Los Banos High. Whether they enjoy it or dread it, students agree that this winter has been unlike any other, giving campus a unique sense of energy, humor and togetherness.
