Preparations continue as the Every 15 Minutes program is in the works and is scheduled to take place on March 12.
The Every 15 Minutes program is an empowering, nationally recognized program that educates students about the real-life consequences and long-term effects of risky behavior when it comes to drinking and driving. The program is designed to challenge students’ to think about the responsibility of decision-making and the impact their decisions have not only on themselves but their family, friends, and the community.
The program was last hosted in 2024 and takes place every two years. This schedule is due to the age group the program is meant to target and the planning that goes into it.
“The event is done every two years because it targets juniors and seniors. And it is more impactful because the following classes get to experience it for the very first time instead of every year,” stated Senior Class Counselor, Ms. Alma Mejia.
The Every 15 Minutes program is specifically aimed at this age group of juniors and seniors because they are young drivers, but generally the program is meant to positively impact everyone on campus and our community.
The event takes about six to eight months to plan and coordinate. And involves the collaboration of our counselors, local businesses, school districts’ office, fire department, funeral home, police department, churches, local donors, teachers, administrators, and students.
“I was asked if I wanted to participate in the Every 15 Minutes program some time back in October of last year. I had heard of the program before, but never believed that I would be a part of it someday. It is an honor to be a part of this program and I believe I will be able to deliver a good message, allowing students to see the reality of what happens Every 15 Minutes,” stated a student participant.
The program lasts two days, and after speaking with the event’s coordinators and participants, they hope students take away the following from the upcoming experience.
“I hope students are mindful that the action you take while impaired have lasting effects that sometimes are irreversible. Therefore, driving safely is top priority considering your life is at risk and everyone else on the road. And how your families are affected by your choices,” stated Senior Class Counselor Ms. Alma Mejia.
“To take action, think twice before getting behind the wheel, and limit your distractions for their safety and everyone else’s,” stated Samantha Pantoja (12).
“To see the consequences that students can face while driving under the influence,” stated a student participant.
